Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

What Is The
Pelvic Floor?

Pelvic floor muscles help to support your internal organs, maintain urinary and fecal continence, and allow for sexual function. Pelvic floor dysfunction may occur when muscles of the pelvic floor are weak or tight, or if there is an impairment of the hip joint, low back, coccyx, or sacrum.

Symptoms/Diagnoses

  • Urinary frequency or urgency
  • Accidental leakage of urine when laughing, sneezing, or coughing
  • Pain in the pelvic region or coccyx
  • Pain with sexual intercourse
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Pregnancy related issues: back pain, sciatica, diastisis recti, scar tissue
We advise that you speak with your insurance company as well, as some plans might require that you see a physician first.

What To Expect During Your First Visit

During your first physical therapy visit, there will be a discussion about your medical history and current symptoms. The Physical Therapist will perform a holistic evaluation of your musculoskeletal system to assess your posture, hips, abdomen, spine, and pelvic floor muscles. This may include an external as well as internal exam.
